Saxidomus nuttallii (Washington clam, butternut clam) Found in area 4 to 5. This clam often has black stain on the exterior of the shell. The inside is stained purple. It has no teeth at the hinge which is a long black hinge like Saxidomus gigantea, but there are ridges and indentations. (See Tresus nuttallii for a comparison of the 4 large clams at the Cove.)
