Saxidomus giganteus or gigantea (butter clam, money shell) Found in area 4 to 5. This shell is large and has a large black hinge. There are 3 teeth at the hinge on each valve. These shells were used by the natives in Puget Sound for money. (See Tresus nuttallii for a comparison of the 4 large clams at the Cove.) |
