Mya arenaria (soft shelled clam)

Found in area 7.

These clams live in places where there is sand, mud, and gravel. They also require low salt, so look for them where fresh water enters the Sound. It is thought that this clam is an import from the east coast. (It might be interesting some day to study the DNA of east coast and west coast Mya arenaria to see whether they are in fact the same species.)

Inside the shell there is a scoop shaped chondrophore.
