Mopalia muscosa (mossy chiton) Found on rocks and shells in the mussel beds. This species has a wide girdle and bristly hairs. It too grows to about 3.5 inches in length. Chitons can hold very tightly to the rocks. If they lose their grip, they have an alternative. They can roll up like a roly-poly for defense. (I apologise for the picture quality. The negatives are misplaced and the image is a copy of the other picture. Indoor light affected the color.) Mossy chitons and hairy chitons live side by side and are about equally plentiful at the beach. |
