Hiatella arctica (rock borer)

Found between areas 6 and 7.

This tiny clam lives in holes bored in rocks. The actual rock borer is Penitella penita, a clam about twice as long. The siphon tips of Hiatella arctica are red. Another clam, Petricola carditoides, the rock dweller, is similar but has a thicker shell and purple siphon tips. It’s amazing to think that a clam this small is a relative of the geoduck.
