Cyanea capillata (sea blubber jellyfish or lion’s mane jellyfish) Found between area 6 and 7, and another in area 5. The sea blubber jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in Puget Sound. This one washed up on the beach at the minus tide level. I’ve tried to rescue another that washed up at the high tide level. I put it in my large minnow net and carried it out as far as I could go to set it free. When jellyfish come in that close to the beach it can be deadly for them. They can become stranded on the shore or get torn on the rocks. The jellyfish pictured here was a little over a foot in diameter. It has skirt-like material as well as tentacles hanging from the underside. This is one jellyfish you don’t want to brush up against. It can give you a nasty sting. |
